Teaching Philosophy
Bass is the instrument that marries harmony with rhythm. If lyrics give a piece of music heart, the bass line gives it soul.
I specialize in teaching electric and upright bass to beginning and intermediate students of all ages in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. I customize the pace and content of our lessons so that each student is challenged enough to feel proud when he or she accomplishes a goal, but comfortable enough to have fun in the process.
I draw
on my own professional musical experience—which runs the gamut
from rock to classical to jazz—to guide my students in playing
the kind of music they most enjoy. With your particular interests and
comfort level in mind, I can help you learn to play along with your
favorite songs, perform in a band at school or with friends, or lay
a solid foundation for serious advanced study.
Experience
I earned a Masters of Jazz Studies at the University of New Orleans and a Bachelors of Music in Classical Performance at Michigan State University . In graduate school, I was lucky to learn from jazz greats like Ellis Marsalis and Harold Batiste. Then, during the five years I spent in New Orleans as a full-time musician, I had some incredible experiences performing and recording with members of Soul Asylum, G Love and Special Sauce, Blind Melon, and Galactic.
I currently
play with The
Mighty Titans of Tone.
